Tiger Woods never played in Travelers Championship before $20M PGA Tour decision

Tiger Woods is the joint-most successful player in PGA Tour history, but the 15-time major champion is yet to compete in the Travelers Championship that takes place each June

Tiger Woods may have made a quick appearance at the Travelers Championship this week, but the 15-time major champion has opted never to tee it up at one of the PGA Tour’s most popular events.

Woods was on site at TPC River Highlands this week for the announcement of the PGA Tour’s new CEO, Brian Rolapp. Despite being on-site, the 82-time PGA Tour winner will once again not be competing at the Travelers as he continues to recover from an Achilles injury.

Despite Woods’ absence from action, one of the strongest fields of the season is in action in Cromwell, Connecticut, after the event was handed signature status.

Following the introduction of the Signature Events, some of the Tour’s most historic events were handed an increased prize pot of $20 million, including the Travelers.

It sees the circuit’s top-rated players come together, with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler defending his title this week.

And things got off to the perfect start for the defending champion, after Scheffler carded an impressive eight-under-par 62 in round one, tying him for the lead alongside Austin Eckroat. It is a big week on and off the course for golf’s leading tour.

On Tuesday it was announced that Rolapp had been appointed CEO of the PGA Tour, working alongside commissioner Jay Monahan, who will then depart following the expiry of his contract in 2026.

Alongside Monahan, Woods helped selected Rolapp as the man for the job.

“Congrats to Brian on becoming CEO of the PGA TOUR,” Woods said of the appointment in a statement on social media. “I’m excited about where the TOUR is headed. And a big thank you to Jay for everything he’s done for our game and for the players and fans.

As Woods alluded to, it will signal the end of Monahan’s term, in what has been one of the most turbulent times in the sport following the emergence of LIV. Welcoming Rolapp to the team, the commissioner said: “A year ago, I informed our Boards that upon completing a decade as Commissioner, I would step down from my role at the end of 2026.

“Since then, we’ve worked together to identify a leader who can build on our momentum and develop a process that ensures a smooth transition.

“We’ve found exactly the right leader in Brian Rolapp, and I’m excited to support him as he transitions from the NFL into his new role leading the PGA Tour.”

And it appears the feeling is mutual, with Rolapp heaping praise on Monahan in a statement of his own.

“Commissioner Monahan is an incredible leader, and it has been a pleasure getting to know him throughout the interview process,” he commented.

“I greatly appreciate his commitment to making me successful in the role and look forward to working with him in partnership throughout this transition.”
