Arne Slot Breaks Silence on Diogo Jota’s Tragic Death

Liverpool, July 3, 2025 – Liverpool Football Club is reeling from the devastating loss of star winger Diogo Jota, who reportedly died in a car crash alongside his brother André in Zamora, Spain. The 28-year-old Portuguese forward, a key figure in Liverpool’s attacking lineup since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, was involved in the fatal accident on the A52 near Palacios de Sanabria, just ten days after his wedding to Rute Cardoso.

The crash, which occurred when the vehicle veered off the road and caught fire, claimed the lives of both Jota and his brother. Emergency services in Castilla y León confirmed, “The 112 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot spoke publicly for the first time about the tragedy, expressing the club’s profound grief. “Diogo was not just an exceptional player but a remarkable person who brought energy and joy to our team,” Slot said. “His loss, alongside his brother André, is a tragedy that words cannot fully capture. Our hearts are with Rute, their 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren, and the entire Jota family.”

Jota, a father of three, had recently shared his wedding joy on social media, posting, “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever,” alongside pictures with his family. The post garnered significant attention, including support from teammates like Darwin Nunez.

Jota’s career began at Paços de Ferreira in Portugal, followed by a stint at Atletico Madrid and a loan spell at FC Porto, where he scored eight goals. His performances led to a £12million move to Wolves, where his 17 goals helped secure Premier League promotion. In 2020, Liverpool signed him for £41million, where he became a vital part of Jürgen Klopp’s squad.

The football world continues to mourn the loss of a talented player and beloved figure, with tributes pouring in for Jota and his family.
