Scottie Scheffler, the world’s best golfer, was left frustrated as his impressive streak came to an end at the Procore Championship ahead of the Ryder Cup in New York this month
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler couldn’t hide his frustration as his streak of 21 consecutive rounds in the 60s ended right before the 2025 Ryder Cup.
Scheffler had to settle for a round in the 70s for the first time since June as ten of the US’s Ryder Cup team took to the course in Round 1 of the Procore Championship. The tournament will give both Ryder Cup teams, the US and Europe, another opportunity to size each other up before the famed competition at the end of the month at New York’s Bethpage State Park.
The US is looking to reclaim the Ryder Cup, having lost the trophy to Europe two years ago in Italy. However, the US’s best player, Scheffler, saw an impressive record come crashing down a couple of weeks after teeing up at Bethpage.
Scheffler built up a streak of 21 consecutive rounds in the 60s but settled for a round in the 70s for the first time since June, carding two-under 70.
“I think it was a pretty frustrating day overall,” Scheffler said. “I felt like I did some things well out there, I just wasn’t quite getting the reward.”
“I was behind all those tents and a scoreboard, and I would have liked to have been able to see the pin when I was hitting my approach,” Scheffler added.
“Granted, you should probably be on the correct hole while doing that, but I could have gotten relief from the whole grandstand tent area, but either one of them would have brought me into the rough so it wasn’t quite worth it.”
Keegan Bradley will captain the US at the Ryder Cup, and Scheffler has praised his dedication to the role. “I think it can’t be stated enough how good of a job Keegan’s done for us so far and the energy that he’s brought has been great,” he said.
“He’s very organized, he’s doing a really good job keeping the guys fired up.”
Scheffler also highlighted the importance of the Procore Championship in Ryder Cup year. The American says it acts as a tune-up before the transatlantic clash.
“Everybody’s excited to be here,” Scheffler said. “This is something we looked at the calendar very early in the season about how we were going to get ready for the Ryder Cup and this has been circled there for a long time. We’re excited to be here, excited to get ready.”
Bradley returned the compliment to Scheffler. “To be honest with you, the more I’m around Scottie, the more I’m impressed with who he is,” Bradley said.
“We all know what a generational talent player Scottie is, but when you see Scottie around our guys, around the rookies, the willingness of him to do literally whatever it takes for us to win the Ryder Cup.”
